Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; he who comes to me shall not hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. All that the Father gives me will come to me; and him who comes to me I will not cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me; and this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up at the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that e very one who sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day."         John: 35-40

The Lord is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him. Psalm 103:13
Father to the fatherless, defender of widows - this is God, whose dwelling is holy.
Psalm 68:5
Surely you are still our Father! Even if Abraham and Jacob would disown us, Lord, you would still be our Father. You are our Redeemer from ages past. Isaiah 63:16
…Is He not your Father, who bought you? Has He not made you and established you?  Deuteronomy 32:6
But now, O LORD, You are our Father…   Isaiah 64:8
He LOVES us more than we can imagine!
He cannot love us more! He cannot love us less! and He raises up OTHERS to love us as well!  Whew!!!     - stm
Do not fret because of evildoers, Nor be envious of the workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, And wither as the green herb. Trust in the LORD, and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.  Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass.  He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, And your justice as the noonday.  Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.  Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; Do not fret-it only causes harm. For evildoers shall be cut off; But those who wait on the LORD, They shall inherit the earth. For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more; Indeed, you will look carefully for his place, But it shall be no more. But the meek shall inherit the earth, And shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. The wicked plots against the just, And gnashes at him with his teeth. The Lord laughs at him, For He sees that his day is coming. The wicked have drawn the sword And have bent their bow, To cast down the poor and needy, To slay those who are of upright conduct. Their sword shall enter their own heart, And their bows shall be broken.  A little that a righteous man has Is better than the riches of many wicked. The LORD knows the days of the upright, And their inheritance shall be forever.  They shall not be ashamed in the evil time, And in the days of famine they shall be satisfied. But the wicked shall perish; And the enemies of the LORD, Like the splendor of the meadows, shall vanish. Into smoke they shall vanish away. The wicked borrows and does not repay, But the righteous shows mercy and gives. For those blessed by Him shall inherit the earth, But those cursed by Him shall be cut off.  The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, And He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the LORD upholds him with His hand. I have been young, and now am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, Nor his descendants begging bread. He is ever merciful, and lends; And his descendants are blessed. Depart from evil, and do good; And dwell forevermore. For the LORD loves justice, And does not forsake His saints; They are preserved forever, But the descendants of the wicked shall be cut off. The righteous shall inherit the land, And dwell in it forever. The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom, And his tongue talks of justice. The law of his God is in his heart; None of his steps shall slide. The wicked watches the righteous, And seeks to slay him. The LORD will not leave him in his hand, Nor condemn him when he is judged. Wait on the LORD, And keep His way, And He shall exalt you to inherit the land; When the wicked are cut off, you shall see it. I have seen the wicked in great power, And spreading himself like a native green tree. Yet he passed away, and behold, he was no more; Indeed I sought him, but he could not be found. Mark the blameless man, and observe the upright; For the future of that man is peace. But the transgressors shall be destroyed together; The future of the wicked shall be cut off. But the salvation of the righteous is from the LORD; He is their strength in the time of trouble.  And the LORD shall help them and deliver them; He shall deliver them from the wicked, And save them, Because they trust in Him.        Psalm 37

[Approximately one-third of the Bible is prophecy]
Surely the Lord GOD does nothing, unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets.  Amos 3:7
Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people. Proverbs 14:34
…blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. Truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.  Matthew 13:16-17 [Jesus speaking]
Prophecy is obviously esoteric, and often the topic of heated debate. But let’s not be overwhelmed, knowing we cannot completely understand all prophesies at this time, and let’s not be argumentative either. But let’s not lose sight of what is clear. For example, in contrast to the ‘wisdom of the world’, things are not getting better and better, but rather, worse and worse….just as the word of God has long warned!
But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come:    (II Timothy 3:1)
The whole point of prophesy - that God KNOWS what is going on, and that we can therefore TRUST Him!
The Bible was not given for our information, but  for our transformation! – D.L.Moody
For the non-believer, THIS is as GOOD as it gets! For the believer, this is as BAD as it gets!  - Kia

Jesus began to preach and to say - ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’  Matthew 4:17

Plan A - stay prayed up!
Plan B - prepare to meet thy Maker!
Though we seem to have avoided calamity yesterday…and the day before that, but we remain on course for a rendezvous with the Bible. A large part of the Bible talks about the time we live in now, but unfortunately we have our minds on other things, or are so intent on twisting what it says that we can’t see what is coming.
My own personal favorite prophecy –
And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.  Revelation  21:4
Not all prophecy is negative!!
And one [angel] cried to another and said: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!"                                     Isaiah 6:3

Father and Son on the Shuttle
Kenny was in his twenties.  I was…well, I was a lot older.  We had been best friends for a lot of years.  He had recently moved a couple states away with his new job, but we kept in touch.  One of us got the idea to spend some time together, so we did a little planning and booked adjacent seats on a flight to Colorado.
The day came.  Met at Dulles, landed in Denver, jumped into our rental car, hopped on 70, and drove 180 miles west.  Up into the Rocky Mountains…Glenwood Springs, a remote but oh so sweet town of less than 9000 folks.  The confluence of the Colorado River and the Roaring Fork River, elevation up around 6000 feet.
Not exactly a secret, Glenwood Springs has been patronized over the years by silver barons and other mega-wealthy folks, movies stars, President William Howard Taft, President Theodore Roosevelt (on several occasions), and the notorious Al Capone.
Our daily routine included eating healthy, sleeping restfully and soaking thoroughly in the world’s largest hot mineral springs pool (930F, and for the not so faint of heart, the ‘therapy pool’, registering 1040F!).  The Native American Utes believed in the healing properties of Glenwood Springs; we wouldn’t argue.
We enjoyed a 16+ mile bike hike through the rugged and beautiful Glenwood Canyon, envying the kayakers sluicing and bobbing through Upper Superstition and Tombstone rapids of the Colorado River, and taking pictures of the abundant wildlife and mountain vistas along the way.
…the heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.
He causes His wind to blow, and the waters flow…
I know all the birds of the mountains…
…for every beast of the forest is Mine…
Everything under Heaven is Mine!
Come and see the works of God…He is awesome…
…the whole earth is full of His glory!
For good measure, we played on some water slides, white water rafted on the Colorado, and hiked the strenuous hour long trail up to the beautiful beyond words Hanging Lake (one of the most special places on the planet for sure!), Bridal Veil Falls and Spouting Rock,
When our time was up in four or five days, we drove a less direct route back to Denver - on some 2 lane roads through the White River National Forest, some of the most beautiful wilderness in North America.  We drove by Grizzly Peak, Lackawanna Gulch and Pikes Peak.  We stopped to watch some ‘cliff diving’ (25 feet or so off a rock ledge into a pool of ice-cold bubbling white water!) near the Devil’s Punchbowl,  and stopped for some more hiking and picture taking at the continental divide, up around 9250 feet of elevation, well above the tree line.
Considering the rest and peacefulness, the nearly continuous outdoor activities in the pristine environment, and especially my company, it was one of my best vacations ever!  I’m sounding like a chamber of commerce guy, I know.
Happy is the man who finds wisdom,…her ways are ways of pleasantness…
Heading back to Dulles…this was mid summer and there were some lengthy weather related flight delays.  We finally arrived at a remote terminal in Dulles at 3 AM.  We hopped on one of their shuttles to get back to the luggage area and parking lots.  Their shuttles are somewhere between an oversized humvee with seats removed, and a railroad box car, way too high and way too wide to ride on a public street.  While not pretty, not comfortable, and not smooth, they mostly get the job done.
A young father stood right in front of Kenny and I in the crowded ‘people mover’, facing the same direction as us, waiting for the behemoth to get underway.  The young man lovingly and faithfully held both arms around his sleeping son, maybe 8 or 9. It made think of how my own dad held me the same way, years and years ago.  And how, similarly, I had held my own son.
The glory of children is their father…
Seeing the father holding his son also made me think that this young man had never ridden this shuttle before, as I had.  I knew the routine – this ‘thing’ was gonna suddenly and without warning lurch into motion.   You either held on or you fell down.  The young dad was not holding on, and to make it worse, he was ‘top heavy’ because he was holding his son.  An accident was in the making – the loving father would fall onto his beloved son.
The Lord watches over the strangers…
The Holy Spirit spoke to my heart –
Be ready.  ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’…help this man…you will know what to do when the time comes.  remember my word...it applies here…and it applies now…even on ‘vacation’…even at 3 AM -
Do not withhold good from whom it is due, when it is in the power of your hand…
Do not keep back help from those who are slipping to destruction…
Do not devise evil against your neighbor, for he dwells by you for safety’s sake…
…hold back those who are stumbling…
The deceiver, the father of lies, the enemy, butted in…arguing….rationalizing –
You’ve GOT to be kidding me! No way!! This is public transportation.  Don’t be stupid.  It’s every man for himself. Survival of the fittest! This dude - he’s not your neighbor…in fact he looks kinda ethnic – I don’t even think he’s from this country!  Don’t get involved.  Don’t embarrass yourself in front of all these folks, especially Kenny.  If you touch him, the man might turn around and punch you!  He might call the cops! You wanna talk to the cops at 3 AM?  He might be a lawyer!  Did you think of that?  Everything will be ok without you! The worst that could happen is he stumbles and bumps into the crowd standing in front of him. He wont hit the floor.  Besides, his kid is too old to be carried anyway…time for him to grow up!  Serves him right if he gets hurt! Mind your own business!
I’ve learned no matter how logical the rationalizing might sound, OBEY God!
Today if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts…
Strictly violating all protocols known to men and behemoths, the instant the clumsy people mover vehicle lurched forward, I held tight to a support post with one hand and grabbed the young father’s belt from behind with my free hand, steadying him for a second or two.  Preventing him from falling face forward onto his son.
A certain Samaritan, as he journeyed… he had compassion…
…You made me bold with strength….
Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved…
In a minute or two, we arrived at the main terminal.  The others filed off to retrieve luggage.  The young dad, still embracing his still sleeping son, curiously peeked around at me… understanding.  And appreciating.
As if nothing much unusual had happened, I introduced myself.  And I complimented the young dad how impressed I was with the loving care he provided for his son – caring for him while he was sleepy, protecting him…how much he obviously loved him!
Edify one another…
I encouraged him to keep up the great job he was doing raising his son.  He wouldn’t be a little boy forever.  One day he would grow up to become a man.  And maybe dad’s life long best friend as well!  As had my own son.
Then I introduced him to Kenny.  My travel partner.  MY son
Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old,
he will not depart from it…

Lost Years                                                                                                                                       [author unknown to me]
A young man was getting ready to graduate college. For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer's showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted.
As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation his father called him into his private study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautiful wrapped gift box.
Curious, but somewhat disappointed the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible. Angrily, he raised his voice at his father and said, "With all your money you give me a Bible?" and stormed out of the house, leaving the holy book.
Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and wonderful family, but realized his father was very old, and thought perhaps he should go to him. He had not seen him since that graduation day. Before he could make arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and take care things.
When he arrived at his father's house, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart. He began to search his father's important papers and saw the still new Bible, just as he had left it years ago. With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. As he read those words, a car key dropped from an envelope taped behind the Bible. It had a tag with the dealer's name, the same dealer who had the sports car he had desired. On the tag was the date of his graduation,  and the words...PAID IN FULL.
How many times do we miss God's blessings because they are not packaged as we expected?
A Father
Four years old: MY daddy can do ANYTHING!
Five years old: My daddy knows a whole lot!
Six years old: My dad is smarter than your dad…
Eight years old: my dad doesn’t know exactly everything…
Ten years old: in the olden days when dad grew up, things were sure different…
Twelve: naturally dad doesn’t know anything about that; he is too old to remember his childhood…
Twenty-one: HIM??  My Lord, he’s hopelessly out of date!
Twenty-five: Dad knows about it, but then he SHOULD because he has been around so long!
Thirty: maybe we should ask Dad what he thinks…after all – he’s had a lot of experience…
Thirty-five: I’m not doing a single thing until I talk to DAD!
Forty: I wonder how Dad whould have handled it; he was so wise…
Fifty: I’d give ANYthing if Dad were here now so I could talk this over with him; too bad I didn’t appreciate how smart he was…I could have learned a lot from him….
My Barber
At the appointed time on the appointed day, my brothers and I went down to the barber.
Wise.  Handsome. Tall.  Athletic.  Strong, yet with the gentle touch and dexterous hands of a surgeon.
To cut the hair on the far side of my head, he didn’t spin the stool, and he didn’t walk around the chair either.  Rather, he snuggled my head over against his chest so he could reach over to the far side,  Working from above.
I could hear his breathing.  I could feel his breathing.
I could feel his heart.
When the whim struck, he blew away the loose hairs from my neck or face with a burst of his own breath.
Once finished, my barber would stand back, gaze proudly at his work, and then proclaim ‘not bad for an amateur!’
How the years went rushing by!  Looking back past all those years, I wish my dad still cut my hair.
The glory of children is their father….
It seems the more i pray for others (hands and knees )many many many times a day, the fewer problems i seem to have.. Now i am not saying i don't go through trials because i do.. but compared to when i use to ask for people to pray for me they have gotten so much less.. I also keep my slate clean with my conscience + Holy Spirit and that helps too but keep on asking for those prayers people as i rather wear holes in my pants than holes in my head…  - Daniel Erline, WV
i have noticed the very  same thing...almost to the point of it being a ‘rule of the 'universe' – that when we get in the doldrums...in a funk...suffer assault and attack....but realize THE Boss is still completely in control, WE are to redirect our focus from our situation on to OTHER folks He puts in our path who might benefit from our gifts and words of encouragement!!  Prayer brings us into cooperation with what it is God has purposed for us to accomplish!                                                                                                     stm
God cannot be a figment of my imagination because He is not at all what I imagined Him to be.                  - C.S. Lewis
The truth may hurt, but it is still the truth!     Anon.
Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.  Psalms 1:1-3
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Joshua 1:8
A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God. Ezekiel 36:26-28
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Palms 51:10
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer.           Psalms 19:14
…let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy, and spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may exult in you. For you bless the righteous, O LORD; you cover him with favor as with a shield.  Psalms 5:11-12
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him so that you may overflow with hope….                Romans 15:13
Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.      Ephesians 3:20-21
The end of worship…is to be the beginning of service
…behold, I am with always, even to the end of the age.  Matthew 28:20

thanks!  i can email it to you if you would like a more direct and more polished presentation!

'it' began 15+ years ago - one encouraging note to one person - the sister of a very casual friend  who mentioned his sister was in jail...it mushroomed...now read on six continents!  not my vision...not my plan...ALL glory to God!

(please feel free to share it freely!  it is always 4 pages front and back, which can be mailed with just one stamp;  always encouraging, non denominational, a-political...and never a charge!)

I haven't checked that inbox in so long I guess it won't let me receive any new messages. Can you try my friend's email (She is also interested in receiving the devotional) at

veronica alverston @ geemail . com

(again, no spaces and gmail is misspelled so it won't get picked up by spam bots.)
