Living with a Mental Illness

Post by vmtwriter on Wed Mar 19, 2014 11:11 am

I have Bipolar Disorder I, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, OCD, PTSD, Panic Disorder, and XYZ!

I've been diagnosed since 2003, but have lived with the disorder nearly my entire life. I went undiagnosed for a very long time, living very wild manic high episodes and despairing depressive lows.

I used to hide my illness from others, but I haven't for a very long time. I have a mental illness. It doesn't define me. I don't let it beat me. And I don't let others use it to beat me, either.

I blog about having BPD at Living Stone Faith

Writing about it helps me through some rough times. I belong to many online communities where others who have BPD can share and encourage each other.

I don't live my life around my illness, I live my life despite my illness. I am a strong advocate for others and I refuse to let stigma stop me. I know that there are those with pre-conceived ideas about someone with BPD and I'd be willing to answer any questions you might have. I've done a lot of research on the topics and I keep current with mental illness in the news.

So, if there is anything you want to know. Just ask.

Re: Living with a Mental Illness

I admire your courage to speak out about your illness! So many Christians are afraid to because sometimes Christians can be cruel to those who are mentally ill. They think that if they are really saved, then the Lord should change them and make them better. I know this isn't always the case. My grandmother had schizophrenia, and before she had a psychotic break and it was revealed to all of us she was sick, she was a Christian. The illness came upon her during menopause. I wish to study this phenomenon while I'm in graduate school, as it seems that it's not that uncommon. I'm studying for a masters in psychological research, so I know a little about your  illnesses. I pray you're able to touch and help others who are going through the same things. It seems you're well on your way to doing that!

Thena, thanks so much. that's my goal in life. To help as many people as possible. I feel it's God's gift, the Bipolar and He gave me the gift to get through it as well. To show others and help them.
